Denmark Calls on Tech Giants to Combat Organized Crime on Social Media
Denmark’s Justice Ministry has urged major tech companies to prevent their platforms from becoming havens for organized crime, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.
Ahead of a meeting in Uppsala, Sweden, with Nordic ministers and representatives from Google, Meta, Snapchat, and TikTok, Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard emphasized the need for a united front against criminal activities facilitated by social media.
He expressed concern over gangs using these platforms and encrypted messaging services to plan crimes and recruit young individuals. “Violence and homicide are being advertised as job opportunities for our youth,” Hummelgaard stated.
Recent reports revealed that Swedish teenagers have been lured into committing serious crimes in Denmark for financial gain. Danish police official Torben Svarrer highlighted this troubling trend, noting that criminals are actively seeking young recruits via social media. The upcoming discussions aim to address these pressing issues with industry leaders.
