Bomb Threats Target Over 200 Schools in Cyprus
On Tuesday morning, bomb threats were reported at over 200 schools across Cyprus, leading to widespread evacuations and police investigations, Xinhua reported. Authorities confirmed that no explosives were discovered during security checks, but investigations are ongoing.
A police spokesperson indicated that the threats originated from a disposable email linked to a Russian provider, although this does not confirm the sender’s location. The messages, written in Greek, included extremist language referencing previous attacks and threats of violence.
Officials noted similarities to a hoax bomb threat from May 2023, which was ultimately classified as low-risk. In response to the situation, a crisis center has been established, with law enforcement working in conjunction with the Education Ministry to ensure student safety.
International agencies, including Interpol and Europol, have been alerted as similar threats have also emerged in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Hungary. Authorities continue to prioritize the safety and security of students and staff.
