Fears Rise Among Austrian Muslims After Far-Right Election Victory
The recent election victory of Austria’s far-right Freedom party (FPÖ) has sparked significant fears among the country’s Muslim community, Hyphen Online revealed yesterday.
The FPÖ, which garnered 29% of the vote, campaigned on a controversial “remigration” platform, advocating for the deportation of citizens with migrant backgrounds who do not conform to their definition of integration. Community leaders report heightened anxieties, with many questioning whether they will face deportation.
Despite the FPÖ’s success, analysts suggest that forming a government may be challenging, as other parties, including the centre-right People’s party (ÖVP), are reluctant to collaborate with them. Any potential deportation policies may also conflict with the European Convention on Human Rights, making them difficult to implement.
Meanwhile, in the UK, various organizations are striving to celebrate and preserve the narratives of Black Muslim communities. Initiatives like the Black Muslim Women Healing Collective and the Black Muslim Collective UK are dedicated to highlighting the contributions and histories of these communities, fostering a sense of unity and resilience amidst growing concerns over discrimination and marginalization.
