The Hague Becomes First City to Ban Fossil Fuel Advertisements

The Hague has become the world’s first city to pass a law banning advertisements for fossil fuel products and services with a high carbon footprint, The Gurdian reported.

The legislation, effective from January 1, 2025, prohibits such ads in public spaces, including billboards and bus shelters. This landmark decision follows a call from UN chief António Guterres for similar bans, akin to those on tobacco.

While some cities have attempted to limit fossil fuel advertising through voluntary measures, The Hague’s law is legally binding. Advocates believe this move could inspire other cities, such as Toronto and Graz, to pursue similar regulations. Experts argue that banning fossil fuel ads could redirect government resources to support sustainable initiatives, enhancing public transport and other eco-friendly options.
