UN Chief: Clean Energy Era Nears as Fossil Fuels Lose Ground
……………….
The world is approaching a pivotal shift toward clean energy, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on Tuesday, as reported by The Guardian. He highlighted falling renewable energy costs and urged nations to prioritize low-carbon solutions to address climate, economic, and energy security challenges.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), over 90% of renewable power projects are now cheaper than fossil fuel alternatives. Solar and onshore wind are notably more affordable due to increased use, major investments, and China’s focus on clean-tech manufacturing. Global investment in renewables reached $2 trillion last year—$800 billion more than fossil fuels.
Guterres called on governments and tech companies to commit to 100% renewable electricity by 2030, warning that continued reliance on fossil fuels undermines efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C. He also urged nations to redirect fossil fuel subsidies into clean energy through updated climate plans due in September under the Paris Agreement.
However, concerns remain over supply chains for renewable technologies and inadequate investment in electricity grids. While the UN emphasized the economic advantages of renewables, experts warned that rising geopolitical tensions and fossil fuel interests could slow progress without bold international leadership and cooperation.
