Global Temperatures Remain Near-Record Highs in April, EU Monitor Reports

Global temperatures stayed at near-record highs in April, extending an unprecedented heat streak, Arab News reported citing the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.

Despite expectations that warming would ease after the fading of last year’s El Niño, temperatures have remained elevated into 2025. April was the second-hottest month on record in the Copernicus dataset, which combines billions of measurements from satellites, ships, aircraft, and weather stations.

All but one of the last 22 months exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels—the Paris Agreement’s critical warming limit. Scientists now believe this threshold will be crossed by 2029 or sooner. Current warming is attributed mainly to fossil fuel burning, though factors like changes in cloud patterns and carbon sinks may also contribute.

The last two years, 2023 and 2024, were the hottest on record, with 2025 likely to rank third. Scientists warn that every fraction of a degree matters and emphasize the urgency of continued climate action despite alarming trends. This period is likely the warmest Earth has experienced in 125,000 years.
