Severe Storm Alfred Leaves Thousands in Queensland Without Power

Hundreds of thousands of residents in Queensland are without power, Reuters reported, following the impact of Storm Alfred, a downgraded tropical cyclone that brought damaging winds and heavy rains. As of Sunday, approximately 316,540 people were affected, with the Gold Coast being the hardest hit, where over 112,000 residents lost power.
The storm reached the Queensland coast on Saturday, prompting significant preparations among residents. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese warned of ongoing risks from flash flooding and strong winds. The Bureau of Meteorology reported that heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding in Brisbane and surrounding regional areas.
Brisbane Airport reopened on Sunday, although ongoing weather conditions may disrupt flight schedules. State Premier David Crisafulli announced that decisions regarding the reopening of around 1,000 schools closed due to the storm would be made later. Tragically, one fatality occurred in northern New South Wales due to floodwaters.
