Hundreds March in Brazil for Religious Freedom
Hundreds gathered at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday for the March for the Defense of Religious Freedom, highlighting the rising religious intolerance in Brazil, VOA reported yesterday.
Participants from various faiths, particularly Afro-Brazilian religions, joined the event, marking its 17th year. Minister for Human Rights Macaé Evaristo emphasized the importance of addressing inequality and supporting diverse beliefs.
The march comes amid a troubling rise in attacks against traditional African-influenced religions, with complaints of religious intolerance increasing by 140% from 2018 to 2023. Despite constitutional protections, incidents of discrimination and violence persist, prompting calls for solidarity and resilience among marginalized communities. Participants aim to raise awareness and advocate for a society free from religious discrimination.
