Australian Police Apologize After Forced Evacuation of Muslim Worshippers

Australian authorities have faced widespread criticism after police in New South Wales (NSW) forcibly evacuated Muslim worshippers during a protest, prompting an official apology.
The incident occurred during demonstrations against Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s visit to Australia, when thousands of protesters gathered in parts of the city, including Town Hall Square. Videos circulating on social media showed police forcibly removing Muslim worshippers while they were performing prayers.
NSW police later confirmed that a senior officer had permitted the group to continue their prayers and acknowledged that the forceful dispersal was not intended to target any religion. “NSW Police apologize for any offense caused by the interruption of this religious process,” said Commissioner Mal Lanyon.
The Lebanese Muslim Association called for a public apology from both the commissioner and NSW Premier Chris Minns. Independent MP Allegra Spender urged an independent inquiry to restore public confidence. While Minns expressed support for the police, noting the risks posed by large-scale demonstrations, the intervention drew condemnation from religious leaders. The Australian National Council of Imams described the action as “shocking, deeply disturbing and totally unacceptable,” while Australia’s special envoy for combating Islamophobia, Aftab Malik, called for a full investigation and a formal apology to the Muslim community.
