Australia Introduces Landmark Bill to Ban Social Media for Children Under 16

Australia’s government has introduced a bill to ban social media access for children under 16, citing mental health concerns, Reuters reported yesterday.

The legislation proposes fines of up to A$49.5 million ($32 million) for non-compliance by platforms. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized the need for strict age verification methods, potentially involving biometrics.

Unlike other countries, this law will not allow for parental consent exemptions. While social media use will be restricted, children will still have access to educational and health-related online services. This initiative addresses rising worries about the negative impacts of social media on youth, particularly regarding body image and mental well-being.
