Australia Plans Minimum Age Limit for Social Media Use Amid Health Concerns
Australia plans to introduce a minimum age limit for social media use, likely between 14 and 16, citing concerns over mental and physical health, Reuters reported today.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized the need for children to engage in real-life activities instead of spending excessive time online, stating, “We want them to have real experiences with real people.” This initiative may position Australia among the first nations to enforce such restrictions, following unsuccessful attempts by the European Union.
Digital rights advocates have expressed concerns that the ban could drive youth to unregulated online spaces, potentially increasing risks. The eSafety Commissioner warned that restrictive measures might limit young people’s access to essential support and push them towards less regulated platforms.
Industry representatives urged the government to consider expert opinions, including those from mental health professionals and marginalized groups, to avoid unintentionally endangering youth. The government plans to conduct an age verification trial before implementing the new laws later this year.
