Uzbekistan Allows Prisoners to Shorten Sentences Through Reading
……………
Uzbekistan has introduced a new amendment to its criminal code allowing prisoners to reduce their sentences by reading state-approved books that promote moral and spiritual values. Under the law, inmates can receive a three-day reduction for each book read, with a maximum of 30 days per year. Life-sentenced prisoners are excluded from the program.
Authorities estimate that more than 13,000 inmates could benefit from the initiative, which is presented as part of rehabilitation and reintegration efforts. However, rights groups argue that broader issues, including restrictions on political freedoms and reports of abuse in prisons, remain unaddressed.
