Uyghurs Detained in Thailand Face Deportation to China
A group of 43 Uyghur men detained in Thailand is at imminent risk of deportation back to China, where they fear persecution and torture, Arab News reported today. Recent recordings reveal that Thai immigration officials presented the men with voluntary deportation documents, which they refused to sign. Activists and family members have expressed alarm over the situation, citing previous deportations that led to severe consequences for Uyghurs sent back to China.
The detainees, who have been held for over a decade, issued a public appeal urging international organizations to intervene. They reported harsh conditions in detention, including inadequate food and lack of hygiene supplies. Despite submitting asylum applications to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the UN has been barred from visiting them.
Concerns have been raised about the Thai government’s motivations for deportation, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations with China. Advocacy groups insist the Uyghurs face unjust treatment and potential harm if returned.
