Philippines: Deadliest Country for Environmental Defenders in Asia

The Philippines has been identified as the deadliest country in Asia for environmental defenders, Arab News reported yesterday citing the latest Global Witness report.

According to the source, in 2023, 17 environmentalists were killed in the country, contributing to a grim total of 298 deaths since 2012. The global toll reached 196, with Colombia leading at 79 killings, followed by Brazil (25), Mexico (18), and Honduras (18).

Jashaf Shamir Lorenzo, head of research at BAN Toxics Philippines, highlighted the severe oppression faced by environmentalists, including red-tagging, abductions, and killings, particularly when they oppose powerful industries or politicians. He criticized the government’s inaction, stating that the impunity enjoyed by perpetrators has persisted since the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Lorenzo emphasized the need for genuine government commitment to protect both the environment and its defenders, warning that without such action, abuses will likely escalate. The report underscores the urgent need for protective measures for those advocating for environmental justice.
