Philippines’ Muslim South Welcomes Peace Commitment by President

Authorities in the Philippines’ southern Muslim region expressed optimism following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s commitment to implement signed peace agreements, Arab News reported yesterday. This pledge comes as the Bangsamoro region, which has faced decades of conflict, approaches the conclusion of its ongoing peace process initiated in 2014 with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

During a ceremony at the presidential palace, Marcos emphasized his administration’s dedication to ensuring security and stability in Mindanao. Mohd. Asnin Pendatun, spokesperson for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), hailed the commitment as a step toward sustainable peace.

However, concerns linger. Drieza Liningding, leader of the Moro Consensus Group, noted that many promises remain unfulfilled, particularly regarding support for Marawi residents affected by the 2017 siege. He urged the government to address these issues to prevent further unrest and foster genuine peace in the region.
