Philippines: Mayon Volcano spews massive column of smoke
A phreatic eruption from the Mayon Volcano summit occurred at 4:40 p.m. on Sunday, February 4, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
The eruption lasted for about 169 seconds based on the seismic record, PHIVOLCS said. According to the statement, this eruption has created a 1200-meter-long column of smoke and ash.
Local residents have reported hearing thunder-like rumbles, followed by ash and steam coming out of the crater. Residents of communities in Albay province close to Mount Mayon were told to stay vigilant.
Mayon, also known as Mount Mayon and Mayon Volcano, is an active stratovolcano in the province of Albay in Bicol, Philippines.
