Flood Death Toll in Northern Vietnam Rises to 10 Amid Heavy Rainfall
……………..
The death toll from recent floods in Vietnam’s northern mountainous provinces has risen to 10, disaster authorities confirmed Sunday, as reported by local news outlets. Heavy rains triggered flash floods in Son La, Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang, and particularly Dien Bien provinces, isolating several communities.
The Ministry of Agriculture reported fatalities and injuries in Dien Bien’s Tia Dinh and Xa Dung communes, where flooding caused the most severe impact. Local officials noted intense rainfall between Thursday and Saturday led to sudden floods.
Rescue efforts included helicopter deployments to reach stranded residents and deliver essential supplies. Many affected individuals were relocated to safer areas, and power and communication services were largely restored by Sunday evening.
Earlier in July, similar floods in Son La resulted in five deaths and significant agricultural losses. Vietnam is currently in its tropical storm season, which frequently brings deadly floods and landslides. Experts link increased severity of such events to climate change. In 2024, Typhoon Yagi caused extensive damage and hundreds of fatalities in the region.
