Massive Pro-Monarchy Protests Erupt in Nepal

Tens of thousands rallied in Kathmandu on Thursday, demanding the restoration of Nepal’s abolished monarchy and Hinduism as the state religion, Arab News reported. Protesters, waving flags and chanting slogans like “Bring the king back,” called for former King Gyanendra Shah’s reinstatement. The march coincided with Republic Day celebrations by Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli’s supporters nearby, prompting riot police to separate the groups to prevent clashes.

Nepal abolished its 239-year-old monarchy in 2008 after mass protests against Gyanendra’s authoritarian rule. Royalist groups, accusing current leaders of corruption, argue the monarchy would stabilize the nation. The protests follow a violent March rally where two died, including a journalist, during clashes with police.

Despite growing public frustration with politicians, analysts deem an immediate royal return unlikely. Gyanendra, now a private citizen, has remained silent on the movement. Authorities permitted staggered rallies to maintain order, but tensions persist as organizers vow to continue demonstrations.
