Curfew Imposed in Nepal After Pro-Monarchy Protests Turn Violent

A curfew has been imposed in the Tinkune, Koteshwor, and Sinamangal areas of Kathmandu following violent clashes between pro-monarchy protesters and security forces, Jurist News reported. The decision, announced by the district administration office, restricts movement and gatherings in the affected regions.

Approximately 10,000 to 15,000 people participated in the protests, which turned violent, resulting in two deaths, including journalist Suresh Rajak, who was trapped in a burning building. Initial protests had been authorized for various groups. Tensions escalated when pro-monarchy protesters attempted to breach security lines, leading to police using tear gas.

Fifty-one individuals were arrested for instigating violence. Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli called for an emergency cabinet meeting. Nepal has faced significant political instability since the abolition of the monarchy in 2008, contributing to economic challenges and rising dissatisfaction among citizens.
