Nepal Collects Over 11,000 kg of Waste from Mount Everest Amid Climbing Deaths

Nepal’s army has collected a staggering 11,000 kilograms of waste from Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse as part of the country’s “Clean Himal” campaign, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.

The haul included 2,226 kg of biodegradable and 8,774 kg of non-biodegradable waste, as well as four human bodies and a human skeleton, the news agency added.

According to the source, Nepali Army Chief Prabhu Ram Sharma emphasized on World Environment Day the need for stricter policies to prevent future pollution in the mountains, and the importance of awareness campaigns from the central to grassroots level.

This year’s cleanup marks the fifth edition of the initiative, which has now collected 119 tons of waste and recovered 14 bodies.

The news comes as at least three climbers have been confirmed dead on Everest this season, with hundreds attempting to reach the summit.
