A court in Kuantan has initiated legal proceedings against a former student accused of desecrating the Quran and insulting Islamic beliefs on social media. The case, which has garnered significant attention, is being closely watched in Malaysia due to the sensitive nature of religious and ethnic issues in the country.

The defendant, identified as 21-year-old Vickneswaran, faces charges for allegedly posting offensive messages on the Threads platform, with the intention of provoking and insulting Islam. The court proceedings were confirmed by Judge Harmi Thamri Mohamed, who scheduled the next procedural hearing for June 29. The trial is set to begin on August 3 and will last for five days.

Vickneswaran has pleaded not guilty to the charges. In parallel, Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), the institution where he was enrolled, announced his permanent expulsion following a disciplinary investigation into the offensive remarks he made regarding religious and racial matters.

The university administration stated that the decision was meant to serve as a strong example to encourage students to be more responsible with their online conduct. The administration also emphasized its zero tolerance policy for content that could escalate religious or ethnic tensions within the country.
