Malaysians stage protest over rising living costs

Thousands of Malaysians marched in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday to protest rising living costs and dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government, Arab News reported. The rally, organized by opposition parties, was the first major demonstration since Anwar took office following the 2022 general elections.

Protesters gathered at multiple locations before assembling at Merdeka (Independence) Square, carrying placards demanding Anwar’s resignation. Many voiced frustration over unfulfilled promises and persistent economic challenges. Fauzi Mahmud, a 35-year-old engineer from Selangor, criticized Anwar’s overseas investment trips, saying the cost of living remains high.

Anwar, who came to power on a reformist platform pledging to combat corruption and nepotism, recently announced populist measures ahead of the protest. These include a one-off cash handout of 100 Malaysian ringgit ($23.71) for adults starting August 31, and subsidized medium-octane fuel priced at 1.99 ringgit per liter for about 18 million motorists, down from 2.05 ringgit.

Political analysts see these moves as attempts to ease public frustration and deter protest participation. Despite the demonstrations, a recent Merdeka Center survey showed Anwar enjoys a 55 percent approval rating, credited to improved political stability and Malaysia’s increased regional profile during its ASEAN chairmanship this year.
