Malaysia faces increasing challenges from rising religious conservatism
————————————
Malaysia is witnessing a surge in support for conservative Islamic policies, especially among younger, more religious Malay voters DW news agency reported.

The opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional (PN), including the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), has gained significant ground, winning 146 of 245 seats in the 2023 state elections and controlling several northern and east coast states.

Malaysia’s multiethnic society faces rising religious conservatism amid dissatisfaction with the ruling coalition’s perceived liberal agenda. Although Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government has not fully embraced PAS’s conservatism, it has reinforced Islamic governance, responding to PN’s growing influence. Experts warn that political Islam’s rise stems partly from Malay youth disillusionment with the current system and promises that Islamic governance will reduce corruption and improve life.

A 2023 Pew survey found 86% of Muslim Malaysians support making Sharia official law. Critics argue Islamization is often political posturing to gain votes rather than genuine religious conviction.
