How Islam Spread Among the Nomads of Kazakhstan
————————-
Islam was introduced to the lands of Kazakhstan in phases, with the initial contact between the Turkic tribes and the religion dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries AD.
According to the Shia Waves Agency, citing the Kazinform website, the major entry point for Islam was the Battle of Talas in 751 between the Arabs and the Chinese. The Turkic tribes shifted their allegiance to the Arab forces during this battle, which paved the way for the establishment of Islam in Southern Kazakhstan and Central Asia.
The Qarluq Khagans formally adopted Islam as the state religion in 960, and their state was subsequently renamed the Qarakhanid Khanate.
These developments led to the entrenchment of Islam in the social, cultural, and political life of the region. They also facilitated the creation of the first Arabic script and the formation of a Turkic literary language based on the Qarluq dialect, which later became known as Chagatai.
