Jordan Becomes First Country to Eliminate Leprosy

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially verified that Jordan has eliminated leprosy, making it the first country globally to achieve this milestone, WHO website reported yesterday.

For over two decades, Jordan has reported no autochthonous cases of the disease, reflecting its strong political commitment and effective public health strategies. Following the Ministry of Health’s request for verification, an independent team conducted a thorough assessment, leading to WHO’s acknowledgment of the country’s success.

WHO officials emphasized that this achievement not only marks a significant public health victory but also combats the stigma associated with leprosy. They highlighted the importance of maintaining robust surveillance systems to manage any potential future cases. Jordan’s accomplishment serves as an inspiration for other nations, showcasing the impact of dedication, collaboration, and strategic planning in overcoming public health challenges.
