Heavy Rainfall Triggers Floods and Evacuations Across Northern China
………………..

Severe rainfall across Beijing and northern China has caused flooding, landslides, and mass evacuations, with at least two confirmed deaths and two missing in Hebei province, according to state media. In Baoding’s Fuping area, hourly rainfall reached a record 145 mm, while over 540 mm fell in eight hours in Xizhuang — surpassing the city’s annual average.

More than 46,000 people were affected, and over 4,600 evacuated. In Beijing’s Miyun district, landslides cut off power and communications in some villages, with over 3,000 people relocated. The Miyun Reservoir saw record inflows of 6,550 cubic meters per second.

Authorities have issued flood warnings in 11 provinces and geological disaster alerts for Beijing. Meteorologists warn of continued intense rainfall due to the East Asian monsoon. Scientists have linked the region’s rising precipitation, including repeated annual rainfall totals in short periods, to climate change, raising concerns over flood defenses and agricultural impacts.
