China Launches Advanced Ocean-Level Intelligent Research Vessel “Tongji”
……………..

China’s first ocean-level intelligent scientific research vessel, Tongji, was delivered in Shanghai, boosting the marine research capabilities of top Chinese universities. Built by China State Shipbuilding Corp’s Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company for Tongji University, construction began in April 2024 and sea trials were completed by May 2025.

Measuring 81.5 meters in length and accommodating 45 people, including 30 scientists, Tongji supports scientific expeditions, offshore engineering, and student training. It features a range of 80,000 nautical miles and can operate autonomously for up to 35 days at speeds of up to 15 knots.

The vessel includes advanced laboratories, multifunctional cabins, and a domestically produced full electric propulsion system. It is the first Chinese research ship to meet the China Classification Society’s intelligent ship standards, enabling autonomous navigation, remote control, and energy-efficient management. Designed as a “maritime campus,” Tongji integrates research, education, and cultural heritage across multiple marine disciplines.
