China: Xinjiang Authorities Tighten Guest Reporting Rules for Uyghurs Amid Human Rights Concerns

Authorities in Xinjiang have intensified a requirement for Uyghurs to report guests in their homes to police within 10 minutes to two hours of arrival, RFA reported on Tuesday.

This policy, first implemented in June 2015, has gained emphasis under Communist Party Secretary Ma Xingrui since December 2021, the source mentioned.

The stringent surveillance measures are part of broader human rights abuses in the region, which some Western governments label as genocide.

Local police confirmed that the reporting system has become more rigorous, with residents in some areas required to notify authorities within two hours and neighbors within one hour. Failure to report can lead to accountability, with adults and teens as young as 14 included in the reporting mandate.

The situation reflects ongoing concerns about governmental control over Uyghur communities amid claims of human rights violations.
