Uyghur Woman Gets 14 More Years in Jail After Finishing 10-Year Sentence for Teaching Quran

A Uyghur woman, Heyrinisa Memet, was sentenced to 14 additional years in jail just days after completing a 10-year sentence for teaching the Quran to teenagers at the request of neighbors, RFA reported today.

Memet is one of several Uyghurs recently re-sentenced in China’s Xinjiang region on alleged charges of “having hatred towards Han Chinese people”.

Authorities also accuse them of using religion to undermine the state and promote separatism.

Rights groups and leaked documents reveal that China is punishing religious practices like Quran teaching, as CCP’s crackdown on Islam persists.

Memet’s case highlights the Chinese government’s crackdown on Uyghurs, a Muslim ethnic minority. Critics say the measures are discriminatory and target peaceful religious practices.
