Massive floods threaten tens of millions as heavy rains batter southern China

Southern China was hit by heavy rains on the weekend, causing flooding in homes, streets, and farmland, CNN reported today.

Tens of millions of people are at risk as rescuers work to evacuate those trapped by rising waters after at least 44 rivers in the Pearl River basin have swelled above the warning line, the source mentioned.

At least 11 people are missing, with six from Jiangwan near Shaoguan city.

The rainstorms have led to landslides and injuries in Guangdong province, home to 127 million people. Over 82,500 people have been relocated due to widespread floods.

More than 80 houses have either collapsed or been severely damaged, resulting in a direct economic loss of nearly 140 million yuan ($20 million), Xinhua reported.
