The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has warned that the population of Myanmar may face an unprecedented crisis during 2022.
The United Nations office stated in a report that the turmoil in Myanmar is expected to lead to the suffering of about half of the Myanmar population in poverty during 2022, and that this would lead to wasting the gains made there since 2005.
The report stated, “This comes at a time when the people of Myanmar are facing an unprecedented political, economic, social, humanitarian and human rights crisis, and that their needs have increased sharply since the military took power and the outbreak of the third wave of the Corona pandemic.”
“The situation has deteriorated since the beginning of 2021, when the military took power and overthrew the democratically elected government. It is estimated that 1.4 million people will need aid, and this number is equivalent to about a quarter of the population of Myanmar.
The UN report indicated that the situation appears bleak during 2022, especially in light of the increasing prices of basic commodities and the repercussions of the seasonal floods that occurred during July and August and affected more than 120 thousand people.
It is also expected that the political and security situation will continue to fluctuate, and the risks of the fourth wave of the Coronavirus will increase due to the decrease in vaccination rates and the emergence of new mutated strains of the virus.
