UN Reports Over 700,000 Displaced in Haiti Amid Gang Violence

The United Nations has reported that more than 700,000 people are now displaced in Haiti, with over half being children, Arab News reported today.

The ongoing gang violence has plunged the country, one of the world’s poorest, into chaos, particularly in the capital, Port-au-Prince, where security and health systems are failing.

According to the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM), the number of internally displaced individuals has surged by 22 percent since June, reaching approximately 702,973. About 75 percent of those displaced are now sheltering in provincial areas, while the remainder face precarious conditions in Port-au-Prince.

The IOM emphasized the urgent need for international support, noting that 83 percent of displaced individuals are living with host families, straining local resources. The UN human rights office reported over 3,600 deaths due to gang violence this year.
