U.S. Federal Judge Orders Release of Head of Wisconsin’s Largest Mosque

A federal judge in the United States has ordered the release of Salah Sarsour, head of the largest mosque in Wisconsin, from immigration detention.

According to the Telegram channel of the Institute for Interfaith Dialogue, the judge said Sarsour had presented a credible claim that security authorities may have violated his right to freedom of speech. The judge also noted that his detention may have been linked to his political positions and advocacy for Muslim rights.

Sarsour, a well-known figure in interfaith dialogue and efforts to build understanding among Muslims, Christians and Jews in Wisconsin, had been in detention since last March.

Supporters had warned that his continued detention could harm interfaith engagement and community relations in the region.

Although the judge has ordered his release, Sarsour’s immigration case will continue to move forward through the legal process.
