Mauritanian MPs Protest Israeli Death Penalty Law, Call for Urgent International Action

Several members of the National Assembly of Mauritania held a protest in Mauritania’s capital on Thursday to condemn the Knesset’s approval of a law imposing the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners.
Lawmakers from both government and opposition blocs gathered in Nouakchott, carrying banners rejecting the legislation and describing it as a serious violation of international humanitarian law. They urged the international community to intervene to halt what they called practices inconsistent with global legal norms.
Participants said the law threatens the rights of prisoners and runs counter to international agreements, particularly the Geneva Conventions, which outline protections for prisoners of war and detainees. Members of various parliamentary parties expressed unified opposition, stressing that such measures undermine fundamental human rights.
Political parties in Mauritania also issued a joint statement denouncing the law and calling on international institutions to uphold their legal and humanitarian responsibilities, ensure the protection of detainees, and guarantee respect for their basic rights.
The protest comes amid continuing international debate over the treatment of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli detention, with human rights organizations reporting harsh conditions and calling for urgent action to safeguard detainees’ rights and hold perpetrators of abuses accountable.
