Record Muslim Representation in U.S. Politics: 38 Muslim Candidates Win in Recent Elections

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) announced that at least 38 Muslim candidates won seats at various levels of government in the recent U.S. elections — marking a historic milestone for Muslim political participation in the country.

According to Al Jazeera, CAIR — the largest Muslim civil rights organization in the United States — reported that out of 76 Muslim candidates who ran for office, half succeeded in securing positions in state legislatures, city governments, and local councils.

Among the key victories, Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City, while Ghazala Hashmi became the lieutenant governor of Virginia — a development CAIR described as a “historic moment” for Muslim political inclusion in the U.S.

Other notable wins include Abdullah Hammoud’s re-election as mayor of Dearborn, Michigan; Hassan Ahmad’s victory in the Dearborn Heights City Council; and Mohamed Beydoun’s election as mayor of Dearborn Heights. Naeem Chaudhry also won a seat on the Hamtramck City Council.

CAIR emphasized that these victories represent the growing political visibility of Muslims in the U.S. and reflect perseverance in the face of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim rhetoric, marking a significant step toward broader representation and civic engagement.
