Zohran Mamdani’s Speech on Muslim Identity Resonates Nationwide

A speech by New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has gone viral, drawing more than 25 million views and sparking nationwide discussion about Muslim identity and Islamophobia in U.S. politics, The New York Times reported.

Speaking outside the Islamic Cultural Center of the Bronx, Mamdani departed from his usual economic focus to address his experiences with discrimination and the pressure to conceal his Muslim identity. “No longer will I live in the shadows,” he declared, describing anti-Muslim bias as “the one form of bigotry that remains largely accepted.”

The Democrat, who could become New York’s first Muslim mayor, accused opponents Andrew M. Cuomo, Curtis Sliwa, and Mayor Eric Adams of fueling prejudice. The speech drew both praise and backlash: Vice President JD Vance mocked Mamdani on X, while Muslim rights advocates hailed the remarks as a historic moment.

Scholars compared the address to Barack Obama’s 2008 speech on race, calling it a turning point for Muslim visibility in politics. Across the country, community leaders and Muslim candidates said Mamdani’s words emboldened them to speak more openly about faith and identity.
