Texas Woman Sentenced to Five Years for Attempted Drowning of Muslim Toddler

A 43-year-old woman, Elizabeth Wolf, was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder and injury to a child for trying to drown a 3-year-old Palestinian-American Muslim girl in a swimming pool in Euless, Texas, in May 2024, Reuters reported.

The attack was deemed racially motivated, with Wolf reportedly making anti-Muslim remarks toward the child’s mother before attempting the assault. A bystander intervened and rescued the toddler, preventing a potential tragedy. Wolf waived her right to a jury trial and received concurrent sentences for both charges.

The case drew national attention, including condemnation from then-President Joe Biden, and highlighted concerns over rising anti-Muslim and anti-Arab sentiment in the United States. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) called the attack a severe example of anti-Muslim hate violence, according to Express News.
