Slovenia Bans Arms Trade with Israel Over Gaza War
………………
Slovenia has become the first European Union country to ban all arms trade with Israel, citing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, according to a government statement released Thursday. The ban includes the import, export, and transit of weapons and military equipment.
The government said it took the step independently due to a lack of consensus within the EU, emphasizing that states have a duty to act when civilians are being denied humanitarian aid. Slovenia also confirmed that no export permits for military equipment to Israel have been issued since October 2023.
Earlier in July, Slovenia declared two far-right Israeli ministers persona non grata, accusing them of inciting violence and committing serious human rights violations against Palestinians.
In June, the country’s parliament voted to recognize Palestinian statehood, joining Ireland, Norway, and Spain in a move prompted by concern over Israel’s military actions.
