Texas Flash Floods Kill 81, Dozens Still Missing as Search Continues
………………..
At least 81 people have died and 41 remain missing after devastating flash floods swept through central Texas on Friday, the BBC reported. The hardest-hit area is Kerr County, where rising waters inundated a riverside Christian girls’ camp, claiming the lives of several children and camp director Richard “Dick” Eastland. Other fatalities have been reported in Travis, Burnet, Williamson, Kendall, and Tom Green counties.
Rescue teams continue searching for the missing despite difficult conditions, including venomous snakes and debris. More rainfall is expected, with flood watches in place until Monday evening.
The floods struck before dawn Friday as the Guadalupe River rose 26 feet in just 45 minutes, catching many campers while they slept. Items from Camp Mystic have been found miles downstream.
Governor Greg Abbott pledged to continue search efforts, calling the situation horrific. President Donald Trump has declared a major disaster for Kerr County, unlocking federal aid, and announced plans to visit Texas.
Local residents have mobilized to help, delivering food, clothing, and shelter to those displaced. Well-wishes have poured in from around the world, with Pope Leo XIV offering prayers for the victims and their families. The death toll is expected to rise as recovery operations continue.
