Muslim US lawmakers decry Islamophobic attacks targetting Zohran Mamdani after his historic victory

A coalition of Muslim American members of Congress has condemned the surge of Islamophobic and racist attacks against Zohran Kwame Mamdani following his historic win in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary on June 24, Muslim Mirror reported.
Representatives Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, André Carson, and Lateefah Simon released a joint statement denouncing hateful rhetoric from Republican lawmakers and right-wing figures, calling it “vile” and dangerous. Tlaib and Omar, the first Muslim women elected to Congress, highlighted their own experiences with Islamophobia and warned that attacks on Mamdani reflect a broader trend of violence against Muslim Americans.
Representative Pramila Jayapal also criticized these attacks, condemning members of Congress like Rep. Andy Ogles, who called for Mamdani’s denaturalization and deportation. Ogles used inflammatory language, accusing Mamdani of “pro-terrorist” views and linking him to communism. Mamdani, a 33-year-old Indian-origin Muslim and son of academic Mahmood Mamdani and filmmaker Mira Nair, won 43.5% of first-choice votes, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Civil rights groups warn that such rhetoric endangers lives. Mamdani will face Republican Curtis Sliwa in the November 4 general election, potentially becoming New York City’s first Muslim and Indian-origin mayor.
