Trump Administration targets Columbia University over alleged failure to combat antisemitism
The Trump administration has warned that Columbia University may no longer meet federal accreditation standards due to its handling of antisemitism on campus, the CNN reported. U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon accused Columbia of showing “deliberate indifference” toward the harassment of Jewish students following October 7, 2023 events.
On Wednesday, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights notified the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Columbia’s accrediting body, of a potential violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. If the university loses accreditation, it could jeopardize access to federal student aid, including grants and loans.
Columbia responded by saying it is addressing the concerns and remains committed to combating antisemitism. The accrediting commission confirmed receipt of the notification but has not yet commented on possible action. The warning follows President Trump’s executive orders directing stricter oversight of universities and launching a task force to address campus antisemitism.
In March, the administration also revoked $400 million in grants to Columbia over related issues. Separately, Trump signed a proclamation blocking most new student visas for Harvard University.
