Trump Administration issues new travel ban on 12 countries

The Trump administration signed a proclamation Wednesday suspending entry to the U.S. for citizens from 12 countries, citing national security concerns, CNBC reported. The affected nations include Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, and others identified as lacking adequate vetting systems to detect potential security threats.

Entry will also be partially restricted for nationals of seven additional countries, such as Cuba, Venezuela, and Turkmenistan. The ban, which takes effect Monday, June 9 at 12:01 a.m. ET, mirrors Trump’s 2017 travel ban, previously upheld by the Supreme Court but later reversed by President Biden in 2021.

Exceptions apply for U.S. permanent residents, athletes attending major events, and close family members who can verify identity through documentation or DNA. The decision follows a recent attack in Boulder, Colorado, involving an Egyptian national—though Egypt is not included in the ban. Several Democratic lawmakers have condemned the new restrictions as discriminatory.
