Tunisian authorities reported on Wednesday that at least 40 migrants, including infants, drowned after their boat capsized off the country’s coast, while 30 others were rescued. According to Walid Shatbari, spokesperson for the Mahdia Court, the vessel was carrying around 70 people when it sank early Wednesday. The victims were identified as migrants from sub-Saharan African countries.

The central Mediterranean remains one of the world’s deadliest migration routes, with more than 32,800 people reported dead or missing since 2014, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Tunisia, along with neighboring Libya, has become a major departure point for migrants attempting to reach Europe, particularly Italy’s Lampedusa Island.
