Flash Floods Displace Over 45,000 in Somalia, UN Reports

Severe flash floods in Somalia have impacted more than 45,000 people since mid-April, Arab News reported citing a UN report.

At least four fatalities, including two children and a woman, were confirmed as rising waters swept away homes and submerged farmland. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that the floods struck Middle Shabelle and Galmudug regions—key agricultural zones—displacing 15,500 people and destroying crops critical to local livelihoods.

Families in makeshift camps face dire shortages of food, clean water, and medical care. OCHA highlighted that underfunded NGOs are struggling to respond amid global aid cuts, including the downsizing of USAID. The Horn of Africa, highly vulnerable to climate change, has seen escalating extreme weather; the 2023 El Niño floods killed over 100 and displaced a million.
