Somali Security Forces Eliminate Over 60 ISIS Fighters in Puntland
In a significant counter-terrorism operation, Somali security forces in Puntland reported the elimination of more than 60 ISIS (Daesh) fighters, Anadolu Agency reported. General Mohamoud Fadhigo, spokesperson for the Puntland Counter-Terrorism Operation, confirmed that a coordinated air and ground assault targeted terrorists in the mountainous Bari region, specifically in the Haraaryo area.
The operation, which involved direct combat, successfully repelled ISIS attacks using suicide bombers on a military base earlier that day, resulting in the deaths of over 15 attackers. While the exact number of security personnel casualties was not disclosed, condolences were expressed for those who lost their lives in defense of the country.
Additionally, the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) announced that a recent airstrike on February 1 killed 14 ISIS militants, including a senior leader, Ahmed Maeleninine, known for orchestrating jihadist deployments to the U.S. and Europe. Somalia continues to confront threats from both ISIS and al-Shabaab.
