US Airstrike Kills Al-Shabab Leader in Somalia
The US military confirmed on Thursday that an airstrike in southern Somalia killed two members of the jihadist group Al-Shabab, including a key leader, Mohamed Mire Jama, also known as Abu Abdirahman, VOA reported.
The strike occurred on December 24, approximately 10 kilometers southwest of Kunyo Barrow, in coordination with the Somali federal government.
AFRICOM stated that no civilians were harmed during the operation and emphasized its ongoing assessment of the results. Somalia’s Ministry of Information praised the meticulously planned strike, highlighting the collaboration with international partners in the hunt for Mire, who oversaw strategic decision-making within Al-Shabab.
The airstrike is part of a broader US effort to combat the Al-Qaeda-linked insurgency in Somalia, a country grappling with decades of civil war and instability.
