Somalia: Cholera death toll climbs to 60 amid new cases of infection
In the past three months, Somalia has seen a significant rise in cholera cases, with 4,956 new cases and 60 deaths reported, Xinhua news agency cited a UNICEF statement on Sunday.
Following uninterrupted transmission of the disease since 2017, this year’s reported cases are three times higher than the average of the last three years, according to the WHO.
The UN health organization stresses that Women and children under five years of age are particularly vulnerable, identifying the main factors contributing to the outbreak as limited access to safe water and sanitation facilities.
The outbreak is largely attributed to El Nino-induced floods, impacting various regions across the impoverished African country.
