Amnesty International Urges Morocco to End Excessive Force Against Youth Protesters

Amnesty International has called on Moroccan authorities to immediately halt the use of excessive force against demonstrators and to ensure accountability for security abuses following a deadly crackdown on youth-led protests, according to Jurist.
The rights organization said verified evidence showed police violently dispersing crowds, ramming vehicles into demonstrators, and beating detainees in multiple cities. Amnesty also documented arbitrary arrests of protesters and bystanders, including minors, amid what it described as “widespread repression” of a movement sparked by economic frustration and demands for reform.
“These scenes of brutality highlight a deeply troubling pattern of excessive force against peaceful assembly,” Amnesty said, urging the government to launch an impartial investigation into the deaths and injuries that occurred.
The protests—driven largely by Morocco’s Generation Z activists—have seen thousands take to the streets over unemployment and inequality. Amnesty stressed that authorities must respect international human rights standards, release unlawfully detained protesters, and ensure citizens can express dissent without fear of violence or retaliation.
