Morocco Produces Africa’s First Mpox Test Kits

Morocco has made a significant breakthrough by producing Africa’s first mpox test kits, developed by the startup Moldiag, Arab News reported today. This initiative aims to reduce the continent’s reliance on imported medical supplies, a challenge highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following the World Health Organization’s declaration of mpox as a global emergency in August 2024, Moldiag began its development. The company has reported selling tests to several African nations, including Burundi, Uganda, and Congo, priced at an affordable $5 each.

Despite Morocco’s limited cases—only three reported—central Africa has witnessed a surge, with over 59,000 cases and 1,164 deaths this year. The lack of adequate laboratory facilities in many regions complicates diagnosis and treatment.

Moldiag has received approval from the Africa CDC and is working towards obtaining WHO approval for its tests. This development marks a crucial step toward enhancing Africa’s healthcare self-sufficiency in response to public health emergencies.
