61 Migrants Missing After Boat Capsizes Off Libya’s Coast
…………….
At least 61 migrants are missing after a boat carrying 74 people capsized off the eastern coast of Libya near the city of Tobruk, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reported on Thursday. Only 13 individuals were rescued, while the others remain unaccounted for.
The incident highlights ongoing dangers faced by migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean, often in unsafe vessels lacking basic safety standards. This tragedy comes shortly after another deadly shipwreck in the same region that claimed the lives of 50 Sudanese migrants, with 24 survivors reported, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Libya’s coastline remains a perilous departure point for irregular migration to Europe, particularly during the summer months when more attempts are made despite the risks. Authorities continue to call for increased search, rescue, and prevention efforts.
